Nature’s Way to Beautiful Skin

Nature’s Way to Beautiful Skin

Let’s face it—you can spend a small fortune on skin care products. Whether or not they’ll actually work is anybody’s guess. And if you take the time to read the labels on most of these products, it can be downright scary and confusing. Most of the ingredients aren’t even recognizable. At some point, you have to ask if it’s worth it to spend all that money on products loaded with chemicals that might not even work.
Fortunately, there are some great natural alternatives for skin care, and most of the ingredients are in your kitchen right now. Instead of forking out a ton of cash for name-brand products, try some of these natural remedies. You just might be surprised at how well—and how fast!—they work.

Diet and Exercise:

Let’s start with the basics. If you don’t eat right and get enough exercise, it will take a toll on your skin. Try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day (be sure to check with your doctor to find out how much exercise is right for you, especially if you haven’t done a lot of it in the past). Follow these diet strategies for healthier skin, not to mention better overall health.

  • Drink water throughout the day. It makes sense that if you’re dehydrated, your skin will be dry too. Water acts to replenish the skin cells.
  • Add fiber to your diet. Women should be getting between 21 and 25 grams of fiber a day, and men should be getting between 31 and 38 grams a day.
  • Reduce the amount of sugar in your diet. Too much sugar actually makes your skin look older.
  • Include some healthy fats in your diet. Essential fatty acids fight off inflammation of the skin. Try eating oily fish—like salmon or sardines—twice a week. And use flaxseed or walnut oil in cooking and on salads.

Acne Treatments:

Most of us might think of acne as a problem that only affects teenagers, but acne can actually be a problem at any age. Even baby boomers can still be suffering from embarrassing bouts of acne. These remedies are simple, but unbelievably effective and fast.

  • White vinegar: Apply vinegar to blemishes with a cotton swab. It helps to remove the pus from the blemish and dries it out.
  • Baking soda and water: Mix baking soda and water to form a paste (similar to toothpaste consistency). Apply on blemishes. Let it dry overnight, then wash it off the next morning. This will dry out the blemishes.
  • Thyme: Mix 1 tablespoon dried thyme with 9 ounces of boiling water. Let the mixture stand for 10 minutes, then strain the thyme from the water. Let the liquid cook, then apply using cotton pads and let it dry naturally on the skin.

Moisturizer:

There must be hundreds of moisturizers on the market today. Here’s an alternative that’s completely natural, inexpensive, and really works.

  • Milk lotion: Mix together 2 tablespoons lime juice, ¼ cup boiled whole milk, and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Use lotion on skin morning and night. It should keep in the refrigerator for about 3 days.

Toner/Antiseptics:

There are dozens of all-natural recipes for skin toners and antiseptics. These are two of the best.

  • Rosemary: Mix 1 tablespoon dried rosemary with 9 ounces boiling water. Let it stand for 10 minutes, then drain the rosemary from the water. Let the water cool. Apply to the skin with cotton pads and let it dry naturally.
  • Vinegar and aspirin: Mix together ½ ounce apple cider vinegar, 3 ounces mineral water and 5 crushed aspirin (uncoated). Apply to skin with cotton pads. It should stay good in the refrigerator for up to a month.

The next time you think about spending a small fortune on the latest skin care product, don’t forget to look in your own kitchen for ideas. Your pocketbook—and your skin—will thank you!
