Yoga vs Pilates: Which Practice Is Right For You?

It’s a popular debate between enthusiasts: which is better for you, Pilates or yoga? Each one has it’s own advantages and are useful in helping you to lead a healthy lifestyle, but which one is best tailored to help you achieve your goals? Well keep reading because I’m breaking down the benefits of each practice and what it can do for you.

The Potential With Pilates

While some of the core Pilates moves are inspired by yoga, it is actually a low-impact yet challenging workout.

Essentially, Pilates helps you to tone your whole body, strengthen your core while also stretching and elongating your whole spine, all while improving your overall posture and pelvic alignment.

On top of that it also helps you to control your body movements, increase elasticity of your muscles, as well as joint mobility, gradually giving you long, lean muscles as opposed to the more bulky muscles you get through weight training.

What’s better is Pilates helps you get those sexy, flat abs we ladies crave, as well as a sexy and strong back. Within a few short weeks of consistent Pilates classes you should start to feel your joints getting stronger, your flexibility increasing, and your posture improving.

Not bad for a low impact workout.

You And Yoga

Most hard-core yoga practitioners describe yoga as a lifestyle, not a workout. While this may be true in their eyes, yoga does have many physical benefits. It not only helps to strengthen your body but it also helps to strengthen your mental state.

With that being said, not only is yoga an effective physical activity but it also promotes a healthy diet, regular meditation, as well as proper breathing techniques which can help you to reduce your stress levels.

Practicing yoga also helps improve flexibility, massages your internal organs, and lubricates your joints, all while detoxifying your body, toning virtually all your muscles, and has been reported to be one of the most effective ways of protecting your body from disease.

Sounds like a pretty good reason to make yoga a part of your lifestyle, don’t you think?

Which Practice Is Perfect…For You?

Each practice has it’s advantages but it depends on what goals you want to achieve that will help you decide which one is best for you.

If you are a lady who prefers a choreographed workout routine, finds herself to be athletic, wants to gain strength, increase your flexibility, and finally get those Victoria’s Secret worthy abs, then Pilates is the perfect practice for you.

If however you find yourself to be the kind of gal who prefers a more chilled out practice, likes to hold poses, has fairly good balance, wants to detoxify your body, tone nearly every muscle while guarding your body against any disease and live a more serene life, then light-jog to the nearest yoga class and downward dog yourself to a healthier life.

No matter which practice you decide on, if you dedicate yourself to it you will reap the benefits of these non-strenuous, results driven workouts. And if you find the practice you chose is not a good fit, simply try the other. You are sure to find a routine that works best for you and your lifestyle.
